Where is the Pelješac wine region?​

The Pelješac Peninsula, widely regarded as one of Croatia’s most distinctive wine regions, is located about an hour’s drive north-west of Dubrovnik. Stretching for around 62 km (approximately 38 miles) along the Adriatic Sea, the peninsula follows the direction of the mainland and is connected to it by a narrow isthmus. Facing the open sea, Pelješac is surrounded by the islands of Šipan, Mljet, Korčula and Hvar.

The peninsula remains largely rural, with only a few small towns scattered along its coastline. 

The combination of Mediterranean climate,  karst soils and a traditional rural lifestyle naturally oriented this region toward viticulture as one of its main activities.

Wine making tradition on the peninsula

Wine is deeply woven into everyday life on the Pelješac Peninsula. Although the region has a centuries-old tradition of grape growing, its wines have only relatively recently gained the international recognition they deserve. Few visitors realize that wine production on Pelješac dates back to ancient times, when Greek settlers first introduced the knowledge of viticulture to this part of the Adriatic.

Over generations, local families adapted to the demanding terrain and challenging conditions of the peninsula. Cultivating vines on steep rocky slopes required persistence and ingenuity, but it also allowed communities to survive in what was often a harsh environment while preserving their way of life.

This wine-centred lifestyle continues today, with many wineries still run by families who have worked the same vineyards for decades.

Pelješac terroir : sun, stone, sea and Plavac Mali

While vineyards scattered across small fertile fields add charm to the landscape of the Pelješac Peninsula, the true wine identity of the region comes from vines planted on the sun-exposed slopes of the hills.

At the heart of this story is Plavac Mali (“little blue”), the indigenous grape variety that thrives in the peninsula’s demanding natural conditions. Growing in poor, stony soils and exposed to long hours of Mediterranean sunshine and summer drought, the vine produces grapes of remarkable concentration.

The breeze from the Adriatic moves through the vineyards, ventilating the vines and drying excess moisture  — an important factor in maintaining healthy vineyards.

The oldest and most renowned Croatian wine appellation, Dingač, lies on Pelješac and is planted with vineyards of Plavac Mali. Its steep slopes are famous for their triple exposure to sunlight; direct sun, reflection from the rocky soil, and reflection from the Adriatic below. Alongside Dingač, the peninsula is also home to two other protected wine-growing areas, Postup and Ponikve, whose vineyards produce some of the peninsula’s bold yet elegant expressions of Plavac Mali.
