Konoba — a space where tradition lives​

You may have come across the word konoba, or noticed restaurants using it in their name, they are usually places that serve traditional food, sometimes in a rustic setting. But a real konoba is something quite different.

A konoba is part of a family home, most often on the ground floor or slightly below it, sometimes built into natural stone. It is not a typical cellar, but a space traditionally shaped around wine production, where barrels, tools and food supplies were kept.

Unlike an ordinary basement, a konoba usually includes a table and chairs. After working, it was natural to sit down, share a glass of wine and enjoy simple food: homemade prosciutto, bread, or whatever was available. In rural life, it also became a place where family and friends would gather.

In Konavle, many houses still have konobas, despite the changes the region has gone through. They remain a part of everyday life.

Because of the time it requires, peka is not something prepared on demand, but planned in advance. The process requires patience and cannot be rushed, which is why peka is often prepared for special family gatherings.

While the exact dishes may vary, this style of cooking reflects the essence of local cuisine — simple ingredients, patience and a strong connection to tradition, where the process is just as important as the result.
